Tripe Pom Poms
This dog cookie recipe will not only turn your dog into your biggest cheerleader, it will also help to make dog obedience training easier.
In the beginning of training, often the fastest way to many dog's brains is through their stomach. That's why we developed this dog cookie, or pom pom, with tripe.
The tripe is very aromatic and flavorful. It will quickly get your dogs attention. Once you have that attention, you can begin to communicate the training that's needed.
This dog cookie recipe also make a wonderful reward for smaller dogs since they are made small. You can also use them to teach your dog to catch a treat in mid-air. These treats are so delectable, that we're sure your dog won't let even one of these touch the ground.
If you are concerned about baking with tripe, there are many health benefits to help you get over your hesitancy. For example, green tripe contains taurine which is beneficial for heart health, maintenance and functioning of skeletal muscles, and preventing liver disease.
- 1/4 c corn meal
- 3/4 c whole wheat flour
- 2 tsp. dried parsley
- 1 tsp. dried dill
- 3/4 c water
- 1/4 c green tripe (see note)
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
1.Preheat oven to 350° F
2.In a medium bowl, whisk together the corn meal, flour, parsley and dill.
3.In a small bowl, stir together the water, tripe and egg.
4.Make a well in the center of the corn meal mixture.
5.Pour in the tripe mixture and stir until thoroughly combined. The mixture will be thick.
6.Lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick baking spray.
7.Using a teaspoon, scoop out and flatten. Then roll into a ball and place on the cookie sheet.
8.Bake for 25 minutes.
9.Turn off the oven and let cool overnight.
10.Or, if your dog can not wait that long, cool completely on a wire rack.
Storing - These tripe pom poms will last for about 2 weeks in the refrigerator. Keep them in the freezer for up to 6 months.
Yield - Using a teaspoon to scoop into round balls will give you about 80 pom poms from this dog cookie recipe.
Tips & Techniques
[Parsley & Dill/b] - The addition of these aromatic herbs is more for the chef than your dog. Although these herbs are beneficial and healthy for your dog, they are added to make the baking experience tolerable. They also add a pleasing smell once baked.
Water or Broth - You can customize this recipe by substituting low sodium chicken or beef broth for the water. The broth will add another layer of flavor for your dog, but water works just as well.
Green Tripe - Since the tripe is unpleasant for human noses, I suggest you work quickly once the can of tripe has been opened and prepare for the future. Before you open the can, prepare at least 5 individual squares of plastic wrap. Then measure 1/4 cup portions onto these squares, (but don't forget to set aside a portion to make this dog cookie recipe!) Next wrap them each and place on a sheet pan that will fit in your freezer. Once fully frozen, wrap each portion in foil and place in a labeled heavy-duty freezer bag. Then, next time your dog requests these tripe pom poms you can thaw and bake with ease. The trip will stay fresh in your freezer for approximately 6 months.
Although there are many pre-made dog training treats and tripe dog treats on the market to chose from, we think these tripe pom poms are well worth the temporary unpleasant smell to a human for the limitless appreciation from our four legged friends.
